  • Skytower - sculpture for new woodland park near Airdrie

I've spent the past six weeks at Glasgow Sculpture Studios creating a commissioned sculpture for a new woodland park on the outskirts of Airdrie. The sculpture titled ' Skytower ' is 6 metres high and made from nearly 2000 metres of round metal bar. Each bar has been cut and shaped to resemble willow and tree branches. It's taken almost 7,000 welds to construct the metal sculpture with each piece of bar delicately interwoven to form the shape.

The sculpture represents the struggle between man – made structures and the kinetic forces of nature, as in an instant the tower is blown away with a sudden gust of wind scattering the branches to the ground. The exact moment is re-created and held as if time has been momentarily frozen.

  • New Sculpture commission for Central Scotland

Rawyards Artwork Commission – Airdrie, Scotland

I am delighted to have been selected to create a new landmark sculpture which will overlook the town of Airdrie in Central Scotland. This is a very exciting project developed by The Forestry Commission as part of the ‘ Woods In and Around Towns ’ [ WIAT ] programme to create a new woodland park of over 40 hectares for the local community in what is currently unused land.

The viewpoint over the town has been identified and the new sculpture will create the central landmark feature for the project. Development drawings have been submitted and the final sculpture is envisaged to be over 5 metres high. In addition to making the sculpture I am really pleased to be working with two of the local schools, St Serfs RC and Clarkson Primary and Nursery School to develop sculpture workshops projects and awareness of Art and Design.

The completed sculpture will be installed in March 2013
